In a bid to accelerate reforms on the women's reservation law, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to the floor leaders of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha ahead of a three-day special sitting and an extended Budget session, urging all parties to come together to pass the amendments to the Women's Reservation Act, 2023. The objective is to demonstrate responsibility toward women and to implement the law, potentially by the 2029 elections.
Against this backdrop, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has called for an all-party meeting for pre-legislative deliberations, questioning the timing amid upcoming Assembly elections. Senior party member Shashi Tharoor has said the Congress remains committed to one-third reservation for women, but stressed that the policy should be inclusive and fair.
Media reporting indicates the government hopes for unanimous passage next week, with the goal of implementing the measures by 2029. The bill, to be known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, would reserve one-third of Lok Sabha and state assembly seats for women, and the government is seeking broad cross-party support.
The push reflects a broader objective to strengthen women’s representation in political institutions, though analysts note that sustaining consensus will require careful wording and extensive outreach across parties. As Parliament reconvenes, the coming days will test whether leaders can coalesce around this landmark reform.
