EPFO keeps 8.25% interest for 2025-26, launches auto-claim pilot
EPFO maintains 8.25% provident fund interest for 2025-26 and tests auto-initiation of claims for inoperative accounts with small balances.
In a move that beneficiaries will welcome, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced an interest rate of 8.25% for provident fund deposits for the 2025-26 financial year. This marks the third consecutive year that EPFO members will earn 8.25% on their retirement savings, a level officials say reflects strong returns from investments in ETFs and other portfolio holdings. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Central Board of Trustees, highlighting EPFO’s ongoing effort to balance prudent investment practices with generous yields for subscribers. The government noted that the rate will be officially notified soon, after which EPFO will credit the interest to members’ accounts.
In another significant development, the CBT approved a pilot project for auto-initiation of claim settlements in inoperative EPFO accounts. The pilot will cover accounts with unclaimed balances of Rs 1,000 or less, involving around 133,000 accounts and about Rs 5.68 crore in total. Under the scheme, amounts will be directly credited to members’ Aadhaar-seeded and EPFO-linked bank accounts without requiring fresh claims or additional documentation, making the process faster and reducing friction for those due their dues.
Officials stressed that the pilot’s success could lead to a broader rollout to accounts with balances above Rs 1,000 in subsequent phases, strengthening member-centric reforms within EPFO. The initiative aligns with broader social security reforms and reflects EPFO’s ongoing push to simplify access to funds while maintaining fiscal discipline. The gesture is likely to be welcomed by subscribers who often face delays in receiving their retirement savings, especially those who may have become inactive in recent years.
Overall, the combination of a stable interest rate and streamlined claim settlement signals a focus on reliability and user convenience for millions of workers who rely on the provident fund for financial security in retirement.
