India's Defence 'Make at Home' Push: 405 New Items Added!

In a significant stride towards bolstering India's self-reliance in military hardware, the Department of Defence Production (DDP) has unveiled its sixth positive indigenisation list. This latest addition includes a staggering 405 new items that will now be exclusively sourced from domestic manufacturers, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) initiative.
This ambitious move is projected to unlock business opportunities worth approximately ₹3,070 crore for Indian industries, with a particular focus on Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The comprehensive list encompasses a wide array of critical defence components and systems, reflecting a deep commitment to reducing import dependency across all branches of the armed forces.
Among the notable inclusions are vital parts for advanced air platforms such as the Su-30MKI fighter jet and its AL-31FP engine, the Advanced Light Helicopter, and the Light Utility Helicopter. Ground-based armoured vehicles like the T-72, T-90, and BMP-II tanks, currently assembled at facilities like the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) in Avadi, Tamil Nadu, will also transition to indigenous manufacturing for many of their sub-systems and components.
The indigenisation push extends to sophisticated missile systems, including the Konkurs-M, Invar, and MRSAM, alongside a diverse range of defence electronics. This includes radars, sonars, fire control systems, satellite communication equipment, and even High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) ammunition. Each item on the list is accompanied by an indicative timeline, ensuring a structured transition from import to domestic sourcing.
Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) are mandated to facilitate this process through their existing 'Make' procedures and in-house development capabilities. The DDP's dedicated online platform, SRIJAN Defence Portal, provides full details of these items, encouraging Indian industry to participate actively in this national endeavour. This initiative is expected to not only enhance India's strategic autonomy but also foster innovation and job creation within the country's manufacturing sector.
