U2 Rocks Mount Temple! 🎸 Band Returns to Dublin School 50 Years On
U2 made a surprise return to their old Dublin school, Mount Temple Comprehensive, for a secret rock 'n' roll gig, celebrating 50 years since their formation. Dive into the nostalgic performance!
Irish rock legends U2 made a historic and heartwarming return to Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin on Friday, staging a surprise rock and roll class exactly 50 years after the band first formed in its halls. The unannounced gig saw Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. treat hundreds of students to a seven-song set, culminating in a powerful encore of “With or Without You.”
The schoolyard buzzed with excitement as students, some leaning out of classroom windows, screamed and cheered, capturing the unforgettable moments on their phones. Even a nearby construction crew paused to catch a bird's-eye view of the iconic band.
It was at this very school, a half-century ago, that a 14-year-old Larry Mullen posted a note on a message board: “Drummer seeks musicians to form band.” From that humble beginning, Feedback, as they were then known, emerged, featuring Paul Hewson (Bono), David Evans (The Edge), and Adam Clayton. While it took a couple more years to become U2 and until 1980 for their debut album “Boy” to drop, the spirit of their origin was palpable.
The band even kicked off their surprise set with “I Will Follow,” a track from that first album.
The 30-minute performance wasn't entirely a secret, with camera crews and international media present.
A special moment saw 32 students join the band on stringed instruments for their hit "One." Bono, ever the showman, bantered with the audience, quipping, “We escaped the lab — how’s the experiment going for you?” as he gestured towards the science classrooms.
The event also served as a promotional push for their new album, “Carnaval De Luz,” which includes a duet between Bono and Dolly Parton. Bono shared some philosophical thoughts on the band's roots, reflecting on how the school was where they began to learn the "humblest and hardest lesson" of needing to be taught and relying on their community.
He thanked the teachers and the "wider community around this rock 'n' roll high school" for their enduring support.", "city": "Dublin
