Modi lauds tribal role in freedom struggle, unveils ₹9,700-cr Gujarat projects

At a large rally in Dediapada, Gujarat, marking the 150th birth anniversary of tribal icon Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the prime minister said tribal freedom fighters played a pivotal role in India's freedom struggle, but their contributions were overlooked to credit a few families. He highlighted tribal leaders Govind Guru, Raja Roopsingh Nayak, Motilal Tejawat, and Dashriben Chaudhary as exemplars of courage and resilience.
He asserted that successive Congress governments neglected tribal welfare during their six decades in power, while the NDA government expanded medical services in tribal regions. He noted a nationwide campaign against sickle cell disease, with six crore tribal people screened so far as part of this initiative.
During the Gujarat visit, he inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for projects totaling more than ₹9,700 crore, aimed at boosting infrastructure, healthcare, education, and sports in tribal areas. He also linked these efforts to broader development plans spanning multiple sectors and reiterated his government’s commitment to tribal empowerment.
Additionally, he referenced recent electoral outcomes as proof that voters reject caste-driven political narratives and remain supportive of the NDA’s mandate, framing the development push as a continuation of the trust placed in him by diverse communities.
Overall, the address framed tribal pride and development as central to the nation's progress, underscoring Birsa Munda’s legacy as a guiding force for policy and outreach.
