SIT Files Complaint Against Akhil Gogoi Over Garg Charge Sheet Leak
The SIT alleges Akhil Gogoi circulated unverified charge-sheet details in Zubeen Garg’s death case; the probe continues with key figures charged.
The special investigation team (SIT), formed to probe Zubeen Garg’s death, filed a complaint against Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi for allegedly circulating on social media unverified documents related to the charge sheet in the case. The nine-member SIT, headed by Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, had submitted the charge sheet before the Kamrup (Metro) Chief Judicial Magistrate on December 12. Circulating such documents is illegal and could mislead the public, officials said. Gogoi, who claimed to be severely ill, stated he would travel to Guwahati to face the case, asserting that he had learned of the government’s action against him for making the charge sheet public. The court has not released certified copies of the charge sheet to multiple applicants; copies have only been shared with the accused and their families, according to investigators. SIT Investigating Officer Rosie Kalita has filed the complaint with the Crime Branch of Assam Police, and a decision on the matter is pending.
Meanwhile, Garg’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma, festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta have been charged in connection with the singer’s death. Mahanta was the chief organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, an event Garg attended, where he died under mysterious circumstances in the sea on September 19. Singapore police have said no foul play is suspected at this stage, and findings will be submitted to Singapore’s State Coroner for a formal inquiry scheduled for January and February 2026. The investigation continues as authorities in India and Singapore coordinate proceedings and await certified copies of the charge sheet.
