Russia's 'Controlled' Elections Underway Amid Ukraine War

Russia is currently holding parliamentary elections, the first since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This three-day voting process, taking place from September 18 to 20, is widely viewed by critics as tightly controlled by the Kremlin, lacking genuine competition and fairness. The ruling party, United Russia, which has the strong backing of President Vladimir Putin, is widely expected to secure the majority of seats in parliament.

Analysts and observers suggest that all ten parties listed on the ballot either openly support the policies of President Putin and the war in Ukraine or do not openly challenge them.

This situation leaves voters with effectively no opposition choice, raising significant questions about the democratic integrity of the election.

Adding to concerns, the only anti-war party, Yabloko, was largely removed from the ballot in the lead-up to polling day, although a few of their candidates reportedly remain in some constituencies. This pre-emptive culling of opposition voices further solidifies the perception of a managed electoral outcome designed to ensure the Kremlin's continued dominance.

The Kremlin is anticipated to leverage the election results to claim broad public backing for both President Putin's leadership and the ongoing military campaign in Ukraine. No surprising victories are expected, reinforcing the narrative that the electoral process serves more as a legitimizing exercise for the current power structure than a true democratic contest.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has lashed out at Russia for conducting these elections in occupied territories, calling them 'held at gunpoint'.
