Puri, Odisha, The majestic Rath Yatra in Puri vibrated with renewed spiritual energy today as the chariots of Lord Jagannath and his divine siblings resumed their historic journey towards the Gundicha Temple. Following a temporary halt on Thursday, lakhs of fervent devotees gathered to pull the colossal chariots, filling the air with resounding chants of 'Jay Jagannath!'
The annual festival, which began a day earlier, saw an unexpected pause when none of the three grand chariots reached their destination on Thursday. Officials explained that delays in the 'Pahandi' rituals, coupled with the onset of darkness, necessitated the deities remaining on their chariots overnight. This created a unique atmosphere of anticipation, with the entire city eagerly awaiting the recommencement of the procession.
Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, revered as the first servitor of Lord Jagannath, addressed the devotees in a video message, reassuring them about the situation. He clarified that delays are not unprecedented, stating, “There is nothing wrong in chariot pulling being made on the day after the scheduled Rath Yatra. Many times, the chariots could not reach the destination on schedule, and they were pulled the next day. The chariot pulling was halted on Thursday due to darkness.” This statement provided comfort and context to the millions observing.
On Thursday, Lord Balabhadra's 'Taladhwaja' Chariot had stopped at Market Chhak after covering about 700 metres, while Devi Subhadra's 'Darpadalana' chariot halted at Marichikote Chhak, roughly 400 metres from its starting point. Lord Jagannath's Nandighosha chariot had moved only a few yards, remaining near the Singhadwar (Lion's Gate) of the main temple. Today, these chariots are now steadily advancing, propelled by the sheer faith and strength of the devotees.
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) estimated a massive turnout of 10-12 lakh devotees, while the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) reported 8-9 lakh participants. Despite the initial delay in rituals, the spirit of the Rath Yatra remains undiminished, uniting millions in a spectacular display of devotion and cultural heritage. The 'Pahandi' itself was delayed by over an hour, with Lord Jagannath's idol experiencing a brief pause at the main gate, contributing to the overall schedule adjustment. The successful resumption highlights the enduring power and communal spirit of this ancient tradition.
