From a Dream Honeymoon to a Shocking Murder: Meghalaya Murder Mystery

What started as a romantic beginning amidst the hills turned into an unimaginable betrayal and murder that has stunned the entire nation.

Raja Raghuvanshi, a newlywed from Indore, was found brutally murdered in the picturesque hills of Meghalaya during his honeymoon with his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi.

A Honeymoon with a Sinful Twist

Raja and Sonam tied the knot in Indore on May 11, 2025. A few days later, on May 20, the couple travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. They checked into a homestay near Nongriat, Cherrapunji, a region known for its iconic root bridges and waterfalls.

However, they mysteriously disappeared on May 23 after telling locals they were going for sightseeing near Wei Sawdong Falls. Alarm bells rang when neither returned to the homestay.

Days later, Raja’s family filed a missing person report, sparking an intense search operation across the terrain.

After days of drone and ground searches, on June 2, NDRF teams located Raja’s body deep in a gorge beneath the falls. His throat had been slit with a sharp weapon, later identified as a local “dao" found nearby. His body was partially decomposed, indicating he had been killed several days earlier.

A senior official from the Meghalaya police said,

We were initially hoping for a rescue. But what we found was a brutal crime scene. His murder was cold, calculated, and pre-planned.

Investigators soon suspected that Sonam was not just a witness but the mastermind behind the murder. Through CCTV footage, call records, and statements from a local guide who claimed to have seen the couple with three unknown men, police identified a terrifying puzzle.

The case took a darker turn when it was revealed that Sonam was allegedly having an extramarital affair with Raj Singh Kushwaha, an employee at her brother’s company. Authorities believe she conspired with Raj and hired three contract killers- Akash, Vishal, and Anand from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to follow them to Meghalaya and kill Raja.

According to sources in the Shillong Police, after committing the murder, Sonam and the three contract killers - Akash, Vishal, and Anand - travelled together to Guwahati, stayed there for a day, and then split up to avoid detection.

The Wife’s Surrender

Further technical surveillance and CCTV footage led them to Lalitpur, where Akash Rajput was arrested. Subsequently, Vishal and Raj Kushwaha were arrested in Indore, and Anand was detained in Sagar. 

On the morning of June 9, Sonam surrendered at the Ghazipur police station in Uttar Pradesh. Dressed in casual clothes and visibly tense, she was immediately taken into custody. SP Ravi Kumar of Ghazipur informed the media:

She walked into the station and admitted to being connected to the Meghalaya case. She gave partial confessions and claimed others manipulated her.

Authorities are now working on transferring Sonam to Meghalaya for detailed interrogation.

Families Reaction

While Raja’s family is heartbroken, they are determined to pursue justice. Raja’s father told reporters in Indore.

She ruined our son’s life and destroyed ours in the process. We welcomed her like a daughter. Now we want nothing less than the death penalty.

Raja's grieving mother Uma Raghuvanshi said:

I want justice for my son. The accused should be hanged. They should be given a strict punishment. I believe more people are involved in the case since one individual could not have orchestrated and carried it out.

Accusing Sonam, Vipin Raghuvanshi said:

We are sure there are more than 5 accused in the case. When Sonam surrendered, she called her brother and said someone had dropped her off here. How did she not know those two people? She just framed the whole scene. She's pretending to surrender. We have faith in the investigations being carried out by the police.

While speaking to NDTV, Uttar Pradesh Police’s Additional Director General (Law and Order), Amitabh Yash, shared new details about the case. He said Sonam claimed that she had been drugged and brought to Ghazipur against her will, in an attempt to show herself as a victim. According to ADG Yash:

Sonam is a poor planner. She lacked knowledge of police procedures and thought she could escape by posing as a victim, but she failed. Sonam presented herself as a victim before the police, claiming she was drugged and brought to Ghazipur. She informed her family about this, knowing the police would eventually reach her. Around 3 am on Monday, she told her family that she was at a dhaba on the Ghazipur-Varanasi road. Her family immediately contacted the Madhya Pradesh police, who informed the local police, leading to Sonam’s arrest. She was sent for a medical check up and then to a One-Stop Centre

However, Sonam’s family believes she is being framed. They claim she might have been threatened or manipulated by others and are asking for a CBI investigation.

Let there be an impartial probe. We don’t believe Sonam could have done this alone.

Chief Minister’s Reaction

Following the murder, many people made racial remarks against the tribes in Meghalaya and also the entire Northeast. They said travelling to Meghalaya was unsafe.

Reacting to the sensational murder, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed shock and grief.

This is not just a law and order issue, it’s a human tragedy. Meghalaya welcomes tourists with open arms. We are committed to ensuring their safety, but this case reminds us how personal betrayal can destroy trust. The state has also been defamed. We will do whatever it takes. Our government and state have been defamed (even though) none of the accused are from Meghalaya.

He confirmed that he has asked the state police to strengthen surveillance at tourist spots and ensure justice for this murder.

What Lies Ahead

Sonam will be brought to Meghalaya under heavy security for custodial questioning. The police are preparing to charge her with murder (IPC Section 302), criminal conspiracy (120B), and destruction of evidence.

The police also plan to probe her financial dealings, insurance claims, and the background of her alleged lover. Meanwhile, the court proceedings are expected to begin within a week.

This chilling incident shook me beyond expectation. In an era where we fight for equality, raise our voice for human rights, such incidents serve as a grim reminder that we are slowly losing our humanity. As the investigation deepens and court proceedings begin, all eyes are now on the justice system to deliver closure to Raja’s grieving family.
