Sam Altman: AI Won't Bring 'Jobs Apocalypse' After All!

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has shared a surprisingly optimistic outlook on the future of employment in the age of artificial intelligence, stating that the widely feared "jobs apocalypse" is unlikely to materialize. Speaking at a conference in Sydney, Altman admitted he was previously concerned about AI's potential to displace a significant number of white-collar jobs but is now "delighted to be wrong" about the severity of its impact.

While several global corporations, including HSBC, Amazon, Standard Chartered, and CBA, have indeed reported replacing some roles with AI, the overall effect hasn't matched Altman's initial grim predictions. He noted that despite the rapid advancements and adoption of AI since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, the social and economic implications have been different from what he and his team expected.

A key realization for Altman has been the enduring importance of the "human part" of employment.

He shared a personal anecdote, explaining how he experimented with using AI to respond to Slack messages and emails but ultimately reverted to handling some interactions himself. "We really do care about people," he reflected, emphasizing that the human connection in communications is something he cannot imagine outsourcing to AI anytime soon.

This insight has led him to believe that the human interaction required in many professions will safeguard them from complete automation.

Altman stated that this understanding has "updated" his perspective, both positively and negatively, regarding the future job market.

He now asserts that the kind of widespread job destruction advocated by some in the AI space is not what he foresees.
