Colombia has elected Abelardo de la Espriella, a far-right millionaire lawyer, as its new president, following a closely contested runoff against left-wing candidate Iván Cepeda. De la Espriella secured victory by a razor-thin margin of less than 1% of the vote.
Initially, both Cepeda and the current president, Gustavo Petro, had expressed reservations about recognizing the preliminary results, preferring to await the official scrutiny process. However, after the official count confirmed a 99.997% match with the initial figures, Senator Cepeda held a press conference in Bogotá to formally concede the election.
During his concession speech, Cepeda stated, "At this stage of the count, I have decided to accept the result of the process, which indicates that Abelardo de la Espriella is the new president of the republic. I do so as an act of democratic responsibility. I do so to contribute to coexistence, peace and dialogue among Colombians."
Despite accepting the outcome, Cepeda made it clear that his concession did not imply an endorsement of everything that transpired during the campaign. He emphasized that "accepting the electoral result does not mean renouncing the truth or remaining silent in the face of facts that we consider serious and that marked this presidential campaign."
A significant point of contention throughout the election was the controversial involvement of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who openly endorsed De la Espriella. Trump notably referred to Cepeda as a "radical left marxist" in his social media posts. Cepeda directly addressed this, criticizing what he called "open and improper foreign interference in Colombia's internal" affairs.
De la Espriella won with approximately 12.96 million votes, while Cepeda garnered 12.7 million, marking a difference of about 250,000 votes. This outcome has sparked discussions about the future of democracy in Colombia and the potential implications of a far-right leader taking office, with some commentators raising fears of an "institutional threat." The election concludes a highly charged period in Colombian politics, leaving many to ponder the path forward for the nation.
