The UK is currently enduring a prolonged heatwave, with southern England and particularly London experiencing almost two weeks of scorching temperatures. This intense and lengthy spell of heat, which has seen daily highs consistently above 28°C in the capital since July 5th, is raising concerns and prompting questions about its causes and duration.
Several factors have converged to create this unusual weather phenomenon. A significant contributor is the overarching climate change trend, with average temperatures in the UK now 1.33°C warmer than during the 1961-1990 period. More strikingly, the very hottest days in the Greater London region have warmed by an astonishing 4.5°C, according to the Met Office.
Beyond climate change, the current atmospheric setup is also playing a crucial role. The jet stream has veered significantly north of the UK, paving the way for a persistent high-pressure system. This system allows warm air to drift in from the south, creating a "heat dome" effect. Within this dome, air sinks, compresses, and heats up as it approaches the ground. This process also dries out the air, preventing cloud formation and allowing strong sunshine to further intensify the ground temperature.
While the national heatwave conditions are expected to ease soon for some parts of the UK, forecasters indicate that London's hot weather is likely to remain "locked in" for another week. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and take precautions during this extended period of high temperatures.
