After months of anticipation, legal battles, and a major online leak, ‘Jana Nayagan’, the final film starring Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has finally received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). A senior official confirmed that the film’s certificate is expected to be issued within the next two to three days, paving the way for its long-awaited release.
The film, originally slated for a January release, faced significant hurdles. Its certification process was halted due to a private complaint filed in the run-up to the Tamil Nadu Assembly election earlier this year. While a single-judge bench of the Madras High Court initially ordered the CBFC to issue the certificate, a division bench later overruled this, leaving producers in limbo and incurring substantial revenue losses.
The drama surrounding ‘Jana Nayagan’ intensified when the film was leaked online in high quality in April. Chennai police investigations revealed that over 1.2 crore people watched the pirated version. Authorities have since made multiple arrests, with the alleged “mastermind” behind the leak apprehended on June 10 by the Cyber Crime Wing.
Adding another layer to the story, Venkat K. Narayana, founder of KVN Productions, which bankrolled ‘Jana Nayagan’, has been appointed as a Special Representative of the Tamil Nadu government in New Delhi. Mr. Narayana had also accompanied Mr. Vijay during his visits to Raj Bhavan when staking a claim to form the government. Politician Thirumavalavan publicly stated there was nothing wrong with this appointment, despite the ongoing film controversy.
With the censor board hurdle now cleared – reportedly receiving an ‘A’ certificate – fans are eagerly awaiting an official announcement for the theatrical debut. Directed by H Vinoth, with a star-studded cast and music by Anirudh Ravichander, expectations are high for ‘Jana Nayagan’ to finally hit screens, possibly later this month, marking a significant milestone in CM Vijay's career as an actor.
