England's New Test Coach Fleming Takes Commentary Box Before Debut

Stephen Fleming, the newly appointed England Test coach, is set to make a surprising detour before officially taking the reins of the national team. Fleming, who stepped into the role as Brendon McCullum's replacement earlier this summer, will first lend his voice to the commentary box for Sky NZ, covering the upcoming five-game T20 series between his native New Zealand and India.

This commentary stint, running from October 22 to November 1, precedes his first official series as England's coach, an away tour to South Africa, which kicks off on December 17. The 53-year-old cricketing veteran will join a star-studded Sky NZ lineup, featuring ex-India head coach Ravi Shastri and former Black Caps legends like Ross Taylor and Tim Southee.

Fleming’s appointment as England’s Test coach marks his first international coaching position, following a highly successful 17-year tenure with Chennai Super Kings, where he led them to five IPL titles.

He also holds the record as New Zealand's longest-serving Test captain during his playing career.

Upon his confirmation in late July, Fleming expressed immense excitement, calling it "one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket." He emphasized his ambition to win now, while also focusing on the team's long-term future and developing young talent.

He particularly looks forward to working with captain Joe Root, whom he described as a "generational talent."

The former England coach, Brendon McCullum, who now coaches the limited-overs sides, has thrown his full support behind Fleming’s appointment. McCullum praised the ECB for securing a coach of Fleming’s caliber, highlighting his global demand and calling him an "outstanding achievement" for English cricket.
