AAP MLA Harmit Pathanmajra Fleeing to Australia Amid Rape Case

Punjab AAP MLA Harmit Singh Pathanmajra, representing Sanour in Patiala district, has been on the run since September 2 in a rape case. He is learnt to have fled to Australia after appearing in a video interview with an Australia-based Punjabi web channel on Friday, November 7, 2025, in which he claimed that he would "return home only after securing bail". The development comes as Patiala police intensified raids on possible hideouts and issued a look-out notice for the first-time MLA. \n\nA Patiala court has already initiated proclaimed offender proceedings against Pathanmajra after he failed to appear in connection with the rape case. The escape marked a dramatic turn after Punjab Police had gone to Karnal in Haryana to arrest him. Police had claimed gunshots were fired and stones pelted by supporters during that operation, though Pathanmajra denies involvement in any firing and says he fled only after learning that he would be killed in a "fake encounter". He has described the charges as a "political conspiracy" aimed at silencing voices for Punjab’s people, and he asserted his faith in the judiciary while arguing that ministers and MLAs in Punjab are not consulted on key matters. The case was registered on September 1 on charges of rape, cheating, and criminal intimidation, based on a Zirakpur-based woman’s complaint that the MLA misrepresented himself as divorced. Police continue to pursue the case as the controversy threatens to widen political tensions in Punjab.
