“Mind of Mencia” Star Carlos Mencia Arrested on 12 Felony Tax Charges!

Comedian Carlos Mencia, best known for his Comedy Central show "Mind of Mencia," was arrested Thursday morning on 12 felony counts related to alleged tax evasion. Prosecutors accuse the 58-year-old comedian of failing to report and pay taxes on more than $8 million in income.

The charges were announced by Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who described Mencia as “one of California’s biggest tax scofflaws.” Mencia faces six felony counts linked to unreported personal income and an additional six tied to corporate taxes, spanning from 2019 to 2024. Authorities allege he owes over $300,000 in state taxes from his earnings.

Mencia was taken into custody at his Los Angeles home around 7 a.m. He remained in custody Thursday afternoon with bail set at $250,000. His first court appearance is anticipated on Monday. If convicted on all counts, Mencia could face more than 10 years in prison, in addition to being required to pay the outstanding tax bills and interest, which could nearly double the total amount owed.

These charges mark the first filed under the newly established Business Tax Fraud Unit of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. DA Hochman noted that Mencia had consistently paid his taxes prior to 2019 but then stopped, ignoring 78 notices from the state regarding his delinquent bills.

Born Ned Arnel Holness in Honduras and raised in East Los Angeles, Mencia began his stand-up career in L.A. clubs in the late 1980s. He rose to prominence in the early 2000s, gaining national recognition with his show "Mind of Mencia" from 2005 to 2008, where he often tackled topics of race, class, and Latino culture. Ironically, during a 2007 episode of his show, Mencia famously stated, “Maybe I’m different, but I think taxes are a good thing.”
