India inks first US LPG deal to meet growing domestic demand
India signs a landmark one-year contract to import 2.2 million tonnes of LPG from the US, signaling a new phase in energy diversification for households under the Ujjwala scheme.
India has secured a landmark one-year contract to import 2.2 million tonnes of LPG from the United States, marking its first structured purchase of American gas. The deal involves state-run oil majors IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL, which will manage imports and distribution starting January 2026. Global players Chevron, Phillips 66, and TotalEnergies Trading SA are expected to export LPG to India aboard 48 very-large gas carriers, illustrating a sizable logistical undertaking to diversify the country’s energy sources.
Effective from January 2026, the arrangement carries the potential for extensions if pricing remains competitive. The 2.2 million tonnes per year equates to roughly 10% of India's projected total LPG imports, which are around 22 million tonnes per annum to meet surging domestic demand. This move opens up a larger role for U.S. supplies in India’s LPG market and potentially paves the way for future purchases beyond the initial term.
The government has framed the agreement as a milestone in energy security and diversification, particularly as India’s LPG consumption grows under the Ujjwala program, which seeks to provide clean cooking fuels to millions of households. By sourcing a portion of imports from the United States, India aims to reduce reliance on traditional Gulf suppliers and create more pricing and supply stability for consumers.
The deal comes amid ongoing debates in Washington about sanctions and tariffs related to global energy flows. While some U.S. lawmakers have proposed measures tied to Russia-related energy purchases, India’s LNG and LPG import strategy remains centered on securing reliable supplies at competitive prices. The trucks and tankers involved will likely bolster India’s household LPG availability and could influence domestic pricing dynamics in the near future.
With the first structured LPG import from the United States on the horizon, Indian refiners and marketers are preparing to implement the new supply chain, ensuring smooth handoffs from the US Gulf Coast producers to Indian ports and storage hubs. The collaboration signals growing energy ties between the two large economies as they navigate a shifting global energy landscape.
