Violence Erupts in Karbi Anglong as Eviction Protests Turn Deadly
Tensions surge in Karbi Anglong as eviction protests turn violent, killing two and triggering internet shutdowns and a security clampdown.
Violence has flared in Assam's Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts as protests over evictions in VGR and PGR lands escalate. At least two people have been killed and about 45 injured, including 38 police personnel, in clashes that spread to Kheroni and Dongkamukam. In response, authorities imposed prohibitory orders and suspended internet services to try to restore calm.
Protesters say the eviction targets encroachers from lands protected under the Sixth Schedule to safeguard tribal land rights. Nine hunger-striking agitators were reportedly picked up for medical treatment, a move that triggered rumours and further mobilised locals. In several spots, arson attacked structures, and the ancestral residence of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council chief was set on fire, amplifying the unrest.
By midweek, the government said additional security forces would be deployed and that dialogue would be pursued to resolve the dispute. Chief Minister said he was closely monitoring the situation and would stand with affected families. The government also clarified that while internet services were suspended, voice calls and fixed broadband would stay functional to ensure essential communication.
Analysts say the unrest underscores ongoing tensions around tribal land rights and the sensitive handling of eviction drives within Assam's tribal heartland. Normalcy is the goal, but locals warn that without constructive dialogue, more clashes could follow.
