This intense heat spell is forecasted to last for several days, with some models suggesting temperatures could hover around 30C for six or seven consecutive days in certain areas, even touching the mid-30s at times, though there's still some uncertainty regarding the exact duration and peak.
This upcoming heatwave follows a notable May, which was recorded as the warmest May day for the UK. The Met Office highlights that heatwaves are becoming more frequent and severe globally, a phenomenon largely attributed to human-induced climate change. Scientists are "virtually certain" that human influence has increased the occurrence and intensity of such extreme heat events. They project that hot spells like this will become more common, especially in the south-east of the UK, as our climate continues to change.
