Prasoon Joshi Named Prasar Bharati Chairman, Aims for Digital Transformation
Renowned lyricist and communications expert Prasoon Joshi named chairman of Prasar Bharati, set to lead the public broadcaster into a new era of digital growth and creative leadership.
New Delhi — The Centre on Saturday announced the appointment of Prasoon Joshi as chairman of Prasar Bharati, filling a vacancy that has persisted since December following Navneet Sehgal's resignation. Joshi arrives with a rich tapestry of experience spanning advertising, cinema, literature and public communication, and is currently the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification. His broad background positions him to steer the public broadcaster through a rapid shift toward digital platforms while catering to changing audience tastes.
Joshi's career includes leadership roles as CEO of McCann World Group India and chairman for Asia Pacific, along with notable contributions as an award-winning lyricist. Officials point to his track record in balancing creative expression with regulatory considerations, a balance that will be closely watched as Prasar Bharati modernizes its content and distribution strategies.
Union information and broadcasting minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described Joshi as a “rare creative spirit,” expressing confidence that his leadership would infuse renewed energy, a deeper sense of purpose, and a fresh creative voice into the organisation. His appointment comes at a critical juncture as the public broadcaster grapples with digital transformation and evolving audience expectations across platforms.
The Prasar Bharati post had been vacant since December, and Joshi's leadership is expected to chart a course that aligns artistic quality with regulatory standards while expanding reach and impact in the digital era. Industry observers will be watching how his multifaceted background translates into programming, governance, and audience engagement for India’s public media."
