Telecoms engineer Jake Bird, based in Oxfordshire, described the challenge of his job, which requires climbing telephone poles while wearing PPE and a harness. Despite the severe conditions, the self-employed 21-year-old has opted to continue working, planning strategic cooling breaks to manage the heat. He commented that 36 degrees is "insane" for his line of work.

Similarly, bricklayer Elijah, working in London, admitted that the heat was "a lot to deal with," even though he typically tries to minimize complaints about the weather. His team has adjusted their schedule to start work earlier and finish by midday to avoid the peak heat, with Elijah also providing his employees with water and ice lollies to help them stay cool.

While many find the heat challenging, it presents a different scenario for some businesses. Emery, a 17-year-old ice cream vendor from Gloucester, noted that the heat is "good for money and for the business." However, even for him, the extreme temperatures come with increased operational costs, as everything in his van needs to be plugged in overnight to maintain coolness for the following day. This record-breaking heatwave underscores the growing impact of climate change on daily life and operations across the UK.
