89 Year Old Suspect Flees After Deadly Mass Shooting In Athens

An 89-year-old man opened fire at a social security office and a courthouse in central Athens, Greece, injuring several people on Tuesday. While police have found the shotgun, they are still searching for him.

The suspect, armed with a shotgun, hurt an employee at the social security office. By the time the police arrived, the gunman had already left. He first went to the fourth floor of the social security fund's offices in the Kerameikos area and shot after telling an employee to duck. His shot struck another employee in the leg.

Alexandros Varveris, the head of the National Social Security Fund, said the gunman wore a trench coat, under which he hid the shotgun. The same suspect later opened fire again on the ground floor of a court building in another part of the city, injuring several people there, according to the police.

The motive for the attack remains unclear. However, state broadcaster ERT reported that the gunman had thrown envelopes with documents onto the courthouse floor before shooting, claiming those were the reasons for his actions.

The injured employee was taken to a hospital after police applied a tourniquet to his leg at the scene. Gun violence is relatively rare in Greece, where firearm ownership is allowed but strictly controlled.
