Tamil Nadu rolls out breakfast for 2,639 conservancy workers in Aruppukottai
Statewide free breakfast for urban local body workers expands from Chennai to Virudhunagar district, benefiting 2,639 conservancy staff in Aruppukottai and surrounding areas.
In Aruppukottai, Tamil Nadu, Revenue Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran served breakfast to conservancy workers as the free breakfast scheme expanded to all urban local bodies in the state. The event, held at Aruppukottai municipality, was well attended by Virudhunagar Collector N.O. Sukhaputra and other officials who underscored the scheme’s aim of easing early-morning duties for sanitation workers who often struggled to cook and carry meals to work. The expansion follows the Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s rollout of the program in Chennai Corporation last November, with the new outreach touching multiple districts.
In Virudhunagar district, a total of 2,639 workers will benefit from the scheme. The breakdown includes 508 workers from Sivakasi Corporation, 1,177 workers across five municipalities—Rajapalayam, Virudhunagar, Srivilliputtur, Aruppukottai and Sattur—and 446 workers from nine Town Panchayats, including Chettiyarpatti, Kariyapatti, Mallankinaru, Mamsapuram, S. Kodikulam, Seithur, Sundapandiyam, W. Pudupatti and Watrap. The beneficiaries will receive a rotating weekly menu designed to offer variety and nutrition as they begin their workday.
Menu rotations include: on Mondays and Fridays, idli, vada and sambar; Tuesdays feature rava kichadi and chutney; Wednesdays offer pongal and sambar; Thursdays present rava uppuma and chutney; Saturdays include rava pongal and sambar; and Sundays serve vermicelli kichadi with sambar. Tirunelveli Regional Director of Municipal Administration Vijayalakshmi, Aruppukottai Municipal Chairperson S. Sundaralakshmi, and Aruppukottai Municipal Commissioner Rajamanickam were among the officials present to witness the inauguration and to reiterate the state government’s commitment to supporting frontline workers who keep cities clean and livable.
