PM Modi to G7: World Lacks Trust, Global South Seeks Partnership!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently addressed leaders at the G7 Summit 2026 in Évian, France, delivering a potent message that the world is suffering from a “shortage of trust” rather than a lack of resources. Participating in a session focused on “Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity,” Mr. Modi emphasized the critical need for mutual trust as the most important strategic asset in today's global landscape.
The high-profile summit saw not only the G7 nations but also partner countries like Brazil, Egypt, Kenya, South Korea, alongside the World Bank and African Development Bank. The host nation, France, aimed to foster a fairer and more effective system of international partnerships through these discussions, reportedly branding some sessions to particularly engage U.S. President Donald Trump.
Highlighting India’s growing role as a voice for the Global South, Mr. Modi stressed that these nations have immense expectations from the world, seeking partnership over mere support. He urged countries to transcend the traditional “donor-recipient” dynamic and collaborate as equals in development contexts. Mr. Modi also showcased India’s contributions in Africa, detailing efforts in training, water management, agriculture, energy, and capacity building.
During the summit, Prime Minister Modi had his first interaction with U.S. President Donald Trump since February 2025, with a formal meeting between the two leaders anticipated soon. While India supported calls for a coordinated response to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak and a roadmap to combat cancer, it notably did not sign a communique concerning the restructuring of the development finance ecosystem, which was backed by the G7, Kenya, and South Korea.
Beyond Modi’s pivotal statements, the G7 Summit 2026 agenda includes pressing global challenges such as the Russia–Ukraine war, tensions in West Asia, energy security, economic uncertainty, and post-pandemic recovery. The discussions underline the complex geopolitical landscape and the collective efforts required to address these issues.
