Indore Water Tragedy: Congress Protests Demand Ouster of BJP Leaders
Protests erupt as Congress demands resignations over contaminated drinking water that has claimed 21 lives in Indore, with calls for accountability and a water audit.
Indore has been jolted by a water contamination tragedy that health officials link to a vomiting and diarrhoea outbreak, with the death toll reaching 21. In response, Congress leaders and workers took to the streets to protest the BJP-led state's handling of the crisis and to demand accountability.
During a Nyay Yatra, Congress leaders marched from Bada Ganpati Square to Rajwada Square, holding placards and calling for FIRs against those responsible for the drinking water disaster in Bhagirathpura, a locality that has drawn national attention. They urged the resignation of State Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya and Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava, accusing the BJP of mismanaging the water supply and failing residents.
Health authorities say seven people have died in Bhagirathpura, though residents put the toll at 17 in the same area; overall, the district has announced compensation of ₹2 lakh to 18 affected families. In a response to the crisis, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered a safe water supply for all residents.
MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari criticized the ruling party for what he described as 25 years of development spending with little to show in clean drinking water for Indore’s residents, promising a public awareness campaign and a formal water audit to uncover systemic failures.
The protests amplify a broader demand for accountability and sustained reforms in Indore’s water infrastructure, with activists signaling that they will maintain pressure on state leadership while residents await concrete measures to restore confidence in the city’s water supply.
