The success is even more remarkable considering the man behind the camera. Directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, the project began when he was just a teenager making homemade sci-fi videos on YouTube. Parsons was only 16 when he started the viral series that caught the attention of A24 executives. Despite his young age, Parsons managed to retain a significant amount of creative control, working alongside a stellar cast that includes Oscar-nominated actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, as well as Mark Duplass and Finn Bennett.
The film’s concept centers on the 'Backrooms'—an eerie, endless labyrinth of windowless, yellow-walled office rooms that originated as a 'creepypasta' online. Parsons told reporters that he was initially paranoid about choosing the right studio but ultimately felt that A24 allowed him the leverage needed to stay true to his vision. With audiences flocking to theaters to see this uncanny world brought to life, it seems his instincts were spot on.
