Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani Named Next CDS, Set to Take Charge on June 1
Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani is appointed the next Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding Gen Anil Chauhan, and will assume office on June 1 after a long and varied military career.
The union government has approved Lieutenant General (Retd) NS Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), replacing General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure ends soon. Subramani will also serve as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, and will take over the CDS post on June 1. He last served as the 47th Vice Chief of the Army Staff until July 2025, before retiring and later working as a military advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat since September. This appointment aims to ensure a smooth leadership transition at a time of evolving regional security dynamics.
Born on July 21, 1968, in Mumbai, NS Raja Subramani was commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in 1985. Over nearly four decades, he has held key leadership roles including command of II Corps and 17 Mountain Division. His career also spans a defence attaché post in Astana, Kazakhstan, and serving as the Deputy Commander of a Rashtriya Rifles sector in Jammu and Kashmir. He holds advanced degrees in Defence Studies from Madras University (MA) and an M.Phil from King’s College London, and is an alumnus of the NDA and IMA.
As CDS, Subramani will become the third person to hold the post since its creation to unify command and strategic planning across the services. The role encompasses leadership of the Department of Military Affairs, coordinating policy, procurement, and doctrine for the Indian armed forces. The government’s choice signals a preference for a leader with strong field command, international exposure, and a proven track record in both operational commands and staff roles.
Analysts will be watching how Subramani translates his diverse experience into strategy and capability development, as India navigates modernisation and jointness across the forces. His appointment comes during a period of ongoing security challenges, including high-altitude operations and counter-insurgency efforts, and is expected to bring continuity and a tested approach to the CDS post.
