King Harald V of Norway, Europe's oldest reigning monarch, passed away on Friday (August 28, 2026) at the age of 89. The Norwegian palace confirmed his death at 6:35 a.m. at the National Hospital in Oslo. His passing marks the end of a remarkable reign characterized by modernization and deep connection with his people, with his son, Crown Prince Haakon, immediately ascending to the throne as King Haakon VIII.

Harald V's life was one of historic significance and personal resilience.

Born in 1937 in Asker, near Oslo, he was the first Norwegian prince to be born in the country since King Olav IV in 1370. His early childhood was dramatically interrupted when, at the age of three, the Nazis occupied Norway at the start of World War II.

To escape capture, his mother, with Harald and his sisters, fled first to Sweden and then across the Atlantic to the United States, while his father and grandfather went into exile in London. Crowned in January 1991 following the death of his British-born father, King Olav V, Harald presided over Norway during a period of significant oil-and-gas-driven economic boom.

He was widely beloved for his modern approach to monarchy, famously breaking with royal tradition by marrying his school sweetheart, Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, after a nine-year battle for royal approval. This decision endeared him to many and signaled a new, more accessible era for the Norwegian royal family.

Throughout his more than three decades on the throne, King Harald V played a largely symbolic role in Norway's democracy of 5.5 million people, where real power resides with an elected parliament. However, he wielded significant moral authority and worked to ensure the monarchy remained relevant and respected. He was known for his efforts to champion social causes, including advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, and was also an accomplished Olympic sailor.
