Leaders gather in Delhi to pay tribute to Jyotirao Phule, praising his lifelong push for education and rights of the marginalised.
Delhi woke up to commemorations marking the 200th birth anniversary of Jyotirao Phule as President Murmu, the Prime Minister, and other senior leaders gathered at Prerna Sthal, Samvidhan Sadan to pay floral tributes. The event underscored Phule's enduring legacy as a social reformer who challenged entrenched hierarchies and championed the upliftment of marginalised communities.
In a tribute, the Prime Minister described Phule as a great reformer whose life was defined by moral courage, restless enquiry, and an unshakable commitment to social good. The PM noted Phule's relentless pursuit of education for all and his belief that social progress hinges on empowering those at the margins.
Phule was born in 1827 in Katgun village in the Satara district of Maharashtra. He, along with colleagues, founded the Satyashodhak Samaj to fight for equal rights and social justice, with a special focus on education for girls. His work laid early foundations for social reform movements in India and continues to inspire generations.
Today’s ceremonies reflect a broader recognition that education, dignity, and equal opportunity remain central to India's development. As leaders recalled Phule's life, many emphasised the ongoing relevance of his ideals in a diverse democracy.
