Polls show Trump’s approval in the mid-30s amid worries about the economy, immigration and Iran ahead of the midterms.
A trio of political polls indicate public approval of Donald Trump’s management of the US economy, immigration and the Iran conflict is slipping, flashing warning lights for Trump-aligned Republican candidates with six months to go until the US midterm elections. The president’s approval hovering in the mid-30s—36%, 35% and 33% respectively—marks near his lowest marks. The polls also show broad concern about the economy, with seven in ten Americans describing it as poor and 72% saying the country is headed in the wrong direction. Approval of Trump’s handling of the economy has fallen to 30%, down from 38% in March, while 23% approve of how he is handling the cost of living and 76% disapprove. In immigration, the approach Trump has championed could prove costly for Republicans: 52% say they are less likely to back a candidate who backs Trump’s deportation stance, compared with 42% who would be more likely to support such a candidate. Among independents, the split is sharper, with 57% preferring a candidate who opposes deportations and 32% favoring those who support them. The AP-NORC poll also reveals that only 40% currently approve of Trump’s immigration policy, a drop from the weeks after his inauguration. This broad anti-establishment sentiment comes as debates over Iran policy and economic security remain central to voters’ minds.
