A family outing to a Cambridgeshire zoo turned into a nightmare when a three-year-old boy ended up in a crocodile enclosure and sustained serious injuries. The incident occurred at Johnsons of Old Hurst, near Huntingdon, on Thursday, leaving the community in shock.
The young boy was attacked by at least one crocodile, and although he remains in a critical condition, police have stated his condition is stable. He was immediately taken to the hospital following the harrowing event.
In a concerning development, Cambridgeshire Police have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident. The man has since been bailed as investigations continue.
Johnsons of Old Hurst is a fully licensed site featuring a farm, cafe, butcher's shop, and a zoo with over 100 animals, including lions, tigers, and a dedicated crocodile house built in 2009. The crocodile enclosure houses various species such as Nile crocodiles, broad-snouted caiman, and American alligators, viewed from elevated walkways with metal-fenced barriers.
Witnesses described the enclosure as having "quite high fences" and "steel mesh fencing" around the viewing platform. One local resident noted that the crocodiles are about 15 feet (4.5m) below the raised platform. A woman who visited the enclosure just 10 minutes before the incident described the crocodiles as appearing calm and largely motionless.
In a remarkable act of bravery, Andy Johnson, who runs the zoo, confirmed to the BBC that his wife, Tracey Johnson, courageously jumped into the enclosure to rescue the boy. This heroic effort undoubtedly played a crucial role in the immediate aftermath of the attack.
