Nipah Nurses in Kolkata in Critical Condition as Care Steps Intensify
Two nurses in Kolkata infected with Nipah virus remain critically ill as hospitals escalate care and authorities widen contact tracing across West Bengal.
Two nurses infected with Nipah virus are admitted to Beliaghata ID Hospital in Kolkata, and their condition remains extremely critical. One was brought in on January 13, 2026, and the other was moved from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital early on January 14, 2026, a health department official said.
Both are in a coma and under intensive care in the ICCU.
An RMO at Barasat hospital who had contact with the infected nurses developed symptoms and is under isolation; tests conducted at the VRDL lab at Kalyani AIIMS were negative.
One nurse recently returned from Katwa in Purba Bardhaman district; she had been ill there and admitted to a local hospital on December 31, 2025. After deteriorating, she was moved to Bardhaman Medical College, then by a special ambulance to Barasat hospital, and later to Beliaghata ID Hospital.
The other nurse is reported to have traveled to Ghugragachi in Nadia district, near the India-Bangladesh border.
Nipah virus is a notifiable disease, requiring immediate reporting to the central government. Health authorities say more than 120 potential contacts are under home isolation as tracing continues, and the Union Health Minister has pledged full support to the state. While there are no specific treatments for Nipah, strict infection-prevention measures and surveillance are the frontline tools to curb spread.
Public health officials are continuing to monitor the situation and advise the public to follow official health advisories.
