West Bengal is looking at a major overhaul in how government jobs are handed out. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently announced that a brand-new recruitment policy will be introduced in the upcoming Budget session of the State Assembly, starting June 18. This move comes as a response to the infamy the state faced due to multiple recruitment scams under the previous administration.
Speaking at a Rojgar Mela in Sealdah, the Chief Minister didn't hold back while discussing the corruption that plagued the prior regime. He noted that the teachers' recruitment and municipal scams had severely damaged West Bengal's reputation. In fact, things got so bad that central railway recruitment boards stopped holding exams in the state, forcing local youth to travel to neighboring states like Bihar, Assam, and Odisha just to sit for a test.
The goal of the new Bill is to restore trust through absolute transparency. One of the most significant changes proposed is the mandatory distribution of carbon copies of OMR sheets to every examinee. Adhikari pointed out that withholding these sheets in the past was a practice with mala fide intention, designed to encourage nepotism and corruption. By giving candidates a copy of their own answers, the government aims to ensure a fair process for all.
It is a significant shift for a state that saw the Supreme Court cancel nearly 26,000 jobs in 2025 due to recruitment irregularities. As the new government prepares for its first major legislative push on employment, all eyes will be on the June session to see if these changes can finally clean up the system for the state’s hardworking youth.
