Rupee Holds Steady at 95.68 vs Dollar as Global Tensions Keep Markets on Edge
The Indian rupee settles nearly flat against the US dollar amid rising US-Iran tensions. Find out what's driving the currency market ahead of the RBI policy meeting.
The Indian rupee had a bit of a rollercoaster ride this Wednesday, May 27, 2026, ultimately ending the day almost exactly where it started. It managed to scrape together a tiny gain of 2 paise, settling at 95.68 against the U.S. dollar. This flat finish comes after a period of volatility that has left investors feeling a bit cautious.
Why the hesitation? Well, geopolitical tensions are back in the headlines. Renewed friction between the U.S. and Iran, along with delays in crucial negotiations, have made traders wary. When things get shaky globally, investors often rush to the safety of the dollar, which puts pressure on the rupee. We’re also seeing some eyes shift toward the Strait of Hormuz, where uncertainty is keeping the U.S. Dollar Index supported.
On the home front, things weren’t exactly smooth sailing either. The domestic stock markets were a bit weak, with the Sensex dropping over 141 points and the Nifty ending slightly lower. To add to that, foreign institutional investors have been pulling money out of Indian equities, which usually doesn't bode well for the local currency.
However, it’s not all bad news. While the dollar is strong, the price of Brent crude oil took a bit of a tumble, trading down over 3% to around $96.57 per barrel. Since India imports a lot of oil, lower prices are actually a bit of a relief for the rupee and can help support it when other factors are pulling it down.
Looking ahead, everyone is waiting for the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee meeting scheduled for early June. Market experts expect the rupee to trade with a slightly negative bias for now, likely staying within the 95.50 to 96.10 range. For now, it’s a game of wait-and-see as global tensions and domestic policy decisions take center stage.
