Varsha Gaikwad of the Congress questioned whether the CM’s ride carried proper PUC certification for the bike, while supporters countered that digital certification was in place and that the gesture was symbolic of the broader fuel-saving push.
In the political scrum that followed, the BJP accused the Congress of engaging in cheap publicity hours after a public display of austerity. Aaditya Thackeray slammed what he called an austerity drama, arguing that genuine savings require more than staged acts. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, meanwhile, shifted to an electric vehicle and reduced his convoy size, signaling a quick shift in optics toward greener transport. Minister Nitesh Rane walked from his bungalow to the State Secretariat, underscoring a range of austerity measures at the state level.
The Opposition pressed for further belt-tightening, calling for car pooling instead of multiple individual cars for ministers. In tandem with the bike rally, Fadnavis announced that the state government would suspend public programmes for the next six months, a move framed as a cost-cutting measure during a time of economic tightening.
Sharad Pawar, leader of the NCP, criticized the timing of austerity moves, questioning why such curbs were being announced only after election results. He urged the Prime Minister to remain for an all-party meeting to discuss the seriousness of the rupee's slide and the national and regional implications of the austerity push. The unfolding debate highlights a broader struggle over whether post-election austerity is a responsible, sustained policy or a political theatre designed to project sacrifice amid economic pressures.
