US Networks SUSPEND Trump Coverage Amid White House Media Ban Outcry
Major US TV networks like ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC halt White House pool coverage in solidarity after Trump bans CNN. A battle over press freedom erupts!
A significant standoff has erupted between the White House and major US television news outlets after the administration barred journalists from several organizations from entering the White House grounds. This move has led to a collective decision by networks including ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC to suspend their video coverage of Donald Trump.
The ban primarily targeted CNN, MS Now, and Politico, prompting these outlets to file a lawsuit against the administration, citing violations of their First Amendment rights. The networks, which form a vital press "pool" sharing the responsibility of capturing and distributing footage of the president, announced their suspension of coverage in a show of solidarity with the barred journalists.
In an unusual response, the White House began promoting its own online feed, branded as "Trump TV." This channel promised
top past moments, announcements, and the latest and greatest from the administration all in one place,
urging viewers to "Get real-time updates and live events streamed DIRECTLY to your phone. No noise. Just the news that matters most, straight from the Trump Administration."
The president abruptly announced his ban over the weekend in a Truth Social post, claiming he was fed up with "purposely negative stories" about him. Journalists from the targeted outlets reportedly had their press badges confiscated by Secret Service. This action marks an extraordinary escalation in Trump's ongoing conflict with news organizations.
The decision to suspend coverage means that for the first time in decades, a president's public appearances may not be covered by the traditional television pool. The importance of the press pool, which has provided coverage of presidents since 1950, became evident when, without professional audio setups, Trump's remarks at a helipad unveiling were inaudible over helicopter noise, despite the White House providing a livestream.
Beyond television networks, other major news organizations, including The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Associated Press, also expressed solidarity by stating they would not publish or distribute images taken by the White House photography pool for a period. A joint statement from the five news networks, including CNN, emphasized, "The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government.
No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting."
While television coverage is on hold, print, radio, and wire service press pools continue to report on Trump's daily movements, ensuring some level of independent reporting persists.
