Telangana to Install EV Charging Every 25-30 Km on Highways

Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO) is moving to install a public Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) for every 25-30 kilometres along national and state highways. Locations under consideration include restaurants, dhabas, and food outlets within 500 metres of an electric sub-station, as well as government lands along roadways. The plan also envisions expanding EVCS in Tier I and II cities, including government offices, hospitals, schools, and railway stations.

There are already over 1,030 EVCS across Telangana, about 600 of them in Hyderabad. A surge in demand is evident, with around 1,500 applications received from private parties to set up stations. The goal is to grow to 6,000 EVCS by 2030 and 12,000 by 2035. Energy use has risen from 2.60 MU in September last year to 10.15 MU in September this year, with the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation contributing 7.81 MU via its EV bus fleet. The buses’ charging stations are currently used only for buses.

The space needed for an EVCS is about 650 square feet, requiring an EV charger and upstream infrastructure such as a distribution transformer, cables, AC distribution boxes, and civil works. Costs vary with charger capacity; a 60KW charger costs around ₹15 lakh, including about ₹7 lakh for the charger and ₹7 lakh for upstream components. Subsidies under PM E-Drive are available to help set up EVCS, and officials say a unified app is in the works to provide real-time information on charging locations.

The initiative aims to ease trip planning for EV owners and accelerate the shift toward cleaner mobility, with Hyderabad serving as a major node in the network, part of Telangana’s broader energy transition.
