Bihar Bridge Collapse: 7 Injured, Political Row Erupts!

Seven individuals sustained injuries following the partial collapse of an under-construction bridge in Bihar's Vaishali district on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The incident occurred near Itwaripur village, under the Lalganj police station, during construction work for a four-lane section of the Bharatmala Pariyojana.

This project is a flagship initiative of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, aimed at significantly enhancing India's road infrastructure. Immediately after the collapse, local authorities, including Vaishali Superintendent of Police Shubhank Mishra and Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Gopal Mandal, rushed to the site to oversee rescue operations and initiate an investigation.

All seven injured received immediate first aid, with three individuals subsequently referred to Sadar Hospital, Hajipur, for more comprehensive medical treatment. A distressing aspect of the incident involved one worker who remained trapped under heavy machinery for approximately an hour and a half, ultimately sustaining a fractured leg. He was eventually rescued safely after rescuers employed a gas cutter.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) issued a statement via its social media platform, X, acknowledging the incident.

According to NHAI, the collapse transpired during the movement of a launching girder on an under-construction four-lane bridge situated on the Bakarpur, Manikpur section of NH-139W in Hajipur. The preliminary assessment points to a "technical issue in the launching girder system" as the cause.

NHAI has assured that a comprehensive technical assessment is currently underway to fully ascertain the circumstances leading to the malfunction, promising appropriate action based on the findings. The authority emphasized its unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of all workers and stakeholders involved in its projects.

The unfortunate event has also sparked political criticism.

Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav swiftly condemned the state government, alleging that the "corrupt NDA government" would, as anticipated, attempt to cover up its perceived corruption in infrastructure projects. This incident underscores broader concerns regarding safety standards and oversight in large-scale public works across the region.
