Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in London for crucial talks with UK Labour leader Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and other German leaders, aiming to bolster international support for Ukraine. The high-level discussions, held at Downing Street, focused on strengthening aid for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
During their meetings, the leaders jointly called upon Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to an “immediate and complete ceasefire.” This diplomatic push comes as the conflict continues to escalate, with significant developments on the ground and in the air.
The diplomatic efforts coincided with Ukrainian drone strikes deep within Russian territory. Kyiv reportedly launched a drone strike on St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city. This attack had a notable impact, overshadowing a flagship economic forum hosted by President Putin, drawing international attention to the vulnerabilities within Russia.
Adding to the tension, Ukraine also reported that a Russian drone struck a nuclear-fuel storage facility near Chornobyl. Ukrainian authorities, including Kyiv’s General Staff and the state atomic agency, confirmed that a container-receiving building was partially destroyed in the attack. Fortunately, officials stated that no spent nuclear fuel was stored in the building at the time of the incident, averting a potentially catastrophic environmental disaster. These recent events underscore the volatile nature of the conflict and the urgent need for diplomatic solutions.
