Get ready, Queen fans! To mark what would have been the legendary Freddie Mercury's 80th birthday, a spectacular collection of his iconic costumes is set to go on display at London's prestigious V&A museum. This free temporary trail, aptly named "Freddie Mercury Splendid Things," promises to be a dazzling tribute to the frontman's unparalleled style and enduring legacy.
The exhibition is inspired by a famous quote from Mercury himself in 1978: "
I like to be surrounded by splendid things. I want to lead a Victorian life surrounded by exquisite clutter.
" Developed in collaboration with his former fiancée and close friend, Mary Austin, who has generously loaned seven of the looks, the trail will guide visitors through key moments of his career.
Eight of Mercury's most memorable outfits will be featured, spotlighting his flamboyant stage presence, charisma, and the multi-disciplinary creativity that defined him. Each of the six stops along the trail will highlight a stand-out period in his life and career, showcasing his evolving fashion from the 1970s and 80s.
Among the treasures on display will be a monochrome ensemble from an early Queen gig at Imperial College, an outfit so iconic it graced the cover of Queen's debut album in 1973. Fans will also marvel at the "Mercury Wing" catsuit, designed by Wendy de Smet, which Mercury famously wore during the "Night At The Opera" tour in 1975 and also in the groundbreaking "Bohemian Rhapsody" music video.
Perhaps most poignantly, his magnificent crown and cloak, crafted by Diana Moseley and worn during the "Magic Tour", including his final stage appearance with Queen at Knebworth in 1986, will also be featured. The V&A emphasizes that the accessories included in the display will offer "a glimpse of the man behind the Mercury persona," allowing visitors to connect with the personal side of the global superstar.
To further enhance the experience, mannequins specially created for the trail will be posed to authentically reflect Mercury's legendary stage presence.
