Taiwan Travelogue Makes History as First Mandarin-to-English Booker Prize Winner!
Discover the captivating story of 'Taiwan Travelogue,' the first Mandarin-translated novel to win the International Booker Prize. A tale of food, love, and history.
A stunning tale of forbidden love and the rich culinary landscape of 1930s Taiwan has just made literary history. 'Taiwan Travelogue,' written by author Yang Shuang-zi and translated by Lin King, has officially won the International Booker Prize. This marks the very first time a novel translated from Mandarin Chinese has secured this prestigious award.
Set during the era when Taiwan was under Japanese rule, the story follows a fictional Japanese writer, Aoyama Chizuko, who embarks on a government-sponsored tour of the island. Accompanying her is a Taiwanese translator, O Chizuru. As the two women travel together, a deep and forbidden romance blossoms against a backdrop of colonial tension and mouth-watering local cuisine.
What makes this book truly unique is its clever presentation. It is framed as a rediscovered travel memoir, complete with fictional footnotes that are so convincing many readers originally thought it was a genuine historical text when it was first published in 2020. Natasha Brown, the chair of the judging panel, described the work as a 'captivating, slyly sophisticated novel' that explores power, culture, and colonial history through a very personal lens.
Author Yang Shuang-zi, who also writes manga and video game scripts, shared some lighthearted insights into her research process. She noted that diving into the themes of travel and food changed her life in two very specific ways: her savings went down and her weight went up. Her dedication clearly paid off, as the original version already held Taiwan's highest literary honor, the Golden Tripod Award.
Translator Lin King highlighted the emotional depth of the story, noting how it captures the resilience of the human spirit. She expressed that even during the difficult times of colonial control, people still found ways to enjoy movies, romance, and good food. With this International Booker Prize win, 'Taiwan Travelogue' is set to bring this vibrant piece of Taiwanese history to a global audience.
