Mourinho Blasts Referees with Photo Evidence in Derby Fury!
Real Madrid's Jose Mourinho ripped into referees after a contentious derby defeat, brandishing printed photos of "clear red card" incidents. Was justice served? #MadridDerby
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, known for his outspoken nature, ignited a post-match press conference by presenting printed photographs as evidence against the refereeing decisions in Sunday’s Madrid derby. Following a 2-1 defeat to cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid, Mourinho vehemently argued that the match officials overlooked two clear red-card incidents that severely impacted his team.
The drama unfolded after Real Madrid suffered a bitter loss, with Jonathan David and Alejandro Grimaldo's second-half goals for Atletico nullifying Antonio Rudiger’s late consolation. While Real finished the match with ten men after Dean Huijsen was dismissed for denying a goalscoring opportunity, Mourinho was convinced Atletico deserved at least one, if not two, sending-offs themselves.
Mourinho's frustration centered on two key moments. He highlighted an incident where Lee Kang-In appeared to stamp on Federico Valverde's calf, an injury later confirmed by a club statement as “severe injury to his left ankle.” The second controversial moment involved ex-Tottenham player Cristian Romero, who seemingly got away with a stamp on Jude Bellingham.
Although Romero received a booking after a VAR review, Mourinho believed it warranted a red card.
Brandishing the printed photos, Mourinho declared,
We can skip the press conference because the story of the match is right here. Those are two clear red cards.
He further questioned, "Imagine if it had been [Atletico’s] nine against [Real’s] 11." He also took aim at referee Ortiz Arias, describing him as “a 41-year-old without international experience,” and suggested that the refereeing committee had made a mistake, stopping short of calling it premeditated.
Mourinho wasn't alone in his outrage. Real Madrid’s official website and social media channels echoed his sentiments, headlining their match report with “A terrible refereeing performance decides the derby” and labeling referee Arias as “abysmal.” England star Jude Bellingham was also seen expressing his fury at the officials as he left the Metropolitano pitch.
This controversial defeat leaves Real Madrid fourth in La Liga after seven matches, one point behind Atletico and six adrift of leaders Barcelona. The team is set to host Villarreal after the international break, but the refereeing debate from the derby is likely to linger.
