An 18-year-old passenger has tragically died following a harrowing horse-drawn carriage accident in New York City's iconic Central Park. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon, saw a horse bolt, throwing the teenager and other passengers from the vehicle before the carriage toppled over after colliding with another.
The New York Police Department confirmed the teenager's death after he was initially hospitalized in critical condition. He was one of four passengers in the carriage when the horse unexpectedly took off. Reports indicate that at least two individuals were ejected from the careening carriage. The other passengers involved reportedly declined medical treatment at the scene.
Adding to the controversy, a representative for the Transport Workers Union stated that the driver had dismounted to take a photograph of his passengers, an action they are strictly prohibited from doing. Alexander Kemp, administrative vice president of the union's local chapter, highlighted that the horse had only been in the park for six weeks and called for a full investigation. He emphasized growing concerns about safety in the park, urging improvements for all vehicles, including e-bicycles, delivery vehicles, pedicabs, and horse-drawn carriages.
Eyewitness video footage captured the horse sprinting wildly through the park, with two people appearing to jump from the four-wheeled carriage. A second video showed the carriage ultimately toppling over after clipping the wheels of another vehicle on the park's busy loop.
This tragic event comes at a "fraught moment" for Central Park's 150-year-old horse-drawn carriage industry. The industry faces an escalating threat of a ban from vocal opponents who argue that the rides are both inhumane to the horses and pose a significant danger to city residents and visitors. This latest accident follows several recent horse-related problems in the park, including the fatal collapse of another horse just last week. The Central Park Conservancy, the nonprofit responsible for operating the park, has also previously expressed support for banning horse-drawn carriages. The incident is expected to intensify the ongoing debate about the future of these historic, yet increasingly controversial, rides in New York City.
