As Assam readies for the 2026 Assembly polls, the NDA announces candidate lists and a polling window from 7 am to 6 pm, with counting set for May 4.
Assam is gearing up for a high-stakes Assembly election in 2026, with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance aiming to clinch a third straight term. The NDA, allied with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), has announced candidate lists across constituencies, signaling a tightly fought contest. In the NDA seat-sharing agreement, the BJP will contest 89 seats, AGP 26, and BPF 11.
Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies will take place in a single phase on April 9, 2026. Voting is scheduled to begin at 7 am and run until 6 pm, in line with Election Commission guidelines. Counting of votes is slated for May 4, 2026.
Among the key BJP candidates are Himanta Biswa Sarma, who will contest Jalukbari; Rajdeep Roy in Silchar; Pradyut Bordoloi in Dispur; and Rameswar Teli in Duliajan. AGP's notable nominees include Atul Bora (Bokakhat), Keshab Mahanta (Kaliabor), Dipti Moyee Choudhury (Bongaigaon) and Dipak Kumar Das (Barpeta). The BPF has fielded Sabharam Basumatary (Gossaigaon) and Rabiram Narzary (Dotma).
Political watchers say the NDA's seat-sharing approach signals a concerted push to consolidate seats across the state, while opposition camps are bracing for a tough contest as campaigning gathers pace. Voters across Assam will decide whether the NDA can extend its hold or whether the INDIA alliance gains momentum ahead of results day.
