Ex-TMC MLA Arrested in Hurried Cremation Case! 🚨
Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh nabbed for alleged role in the hurried cremation of an RG Kar rape-murder victim. CM's intervention led to a fresh FIR. #JusticeForVictim
Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh was arrested by the West Bengal Police on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, for his alleged involvement in the hurried cremation of the body of a 31-year-old resident doctor. The victim was tragically raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
This significant development comes days after Barrackpore City Police lodged a fresh First Information Report (FIR) on Sunday, August 9, 2026. This action followed a directive from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who called for a probe into the alleged hurried cremation of the victim without her family's consent. The FIR was lodged by the victim’s father at the Khardah police station. The Chief Minister also clarified that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was not handling the hurried cremation aspect of the case and highlighted that no signatures from the family were taken at the crematorium.
Police officials revealed that Ghosh, who represented Panihati, immediately fled to Odisha after the FIR was lodged. He reportedly hid in a hotel in Puri, using a new SIM card in an attempt to evade capture and only keeping in touch with a few close associates. However, police tracked his mobile tower location on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, tracing him to the hotel. A team from Khardah police then apprehended him in the early hours of Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
Nirmal Ghosh is currently being transported by road to Kolkata, where he is scheduled to be produced before the court on Friday, August 14, 2026. This arrest follows earlier efforts by the victim’s mother, Ratna Debnath, now a BJP MLA from Panihati, who had moved the Sealdah court on May 13 (year not specified) seeking the arrest of Ghosh and two other party functionaries in connection with the incident.
