BRICS Summit Kicks Off in Delhi: Putin Arrives, Xi Jinping Confirmed!

New Delhi is buzzing with anticipation as the much-awaited BRICS Summit officially kicks off, drawing global attention to India's capital. Russian President Vladimir Putin has already landed for the high-profile event, signaling the start of crucial discussions among the bloc's leaders.

Adding significant weight to the summit, China has confirmed that President Xi Jinping will also be in attendance.

This marks a notable visit, as it will be his first trip to India in nearly seven years.

His last visit was in 2019 for an informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi near Chennai.

The presence of both leaders, particularly Xi Jinping, puts the spotlight on the ongoing efforts to stabilize relations between India and China. Despite recent diplomatic engagements aimed at easing tensions, the two Asian giants continue to navigate a complex relationship, particularly concerning their unresolved boundary dispute.

Recent months have seen continued efforts to improve ties. In August, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who serve as Special Representatives on the boundary question, reached an eight-point consensus. This included discussions on additional military meeting points, new hotline channels, and the potential reopening of three designated border trading points.

Furthermore, India and China held their first corps commander-level meeting in the eastern sector in Arunachal Pradesh earlier this month.

However, India consistently maintains that peace and tranquility along the border are fundamental for the normalization of bilateral relations.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated this stance during a meeting with Wang in July, emphasizing that progress on the border remains a prerequisite for fully normalizing India-China ties.

With President Xi's presence and his expected meeting with Prime Minister Modi, observers will be keenly watching for any indications of how far the two countries are prepared to advance the process of stabilizing their relationship while continuing to address the long-standing border issues. The summit promises to be a platform for significant geopolitical dialogues and potential breakthroughs.
