The political atmosphere in Punjab is heating up as Congress's general secretary in-charge, Bhupesh Baghel, issued a stern warning to party workers on Monday (August 3, 2026). Addressing a gathering in Bathinda, Baghel cautioned against "traitors within the party who could cause serious damage," emphasizing the need for vigilance as the party mobilizes for the 2027 Assembly elections.
Baghel highlighted that the upcoming elections won't just be fought by candidates, but by the entire party's rank and file, stressing the importance of strengthening the organization at the grassroots level. He even invoked senior leader Rahul Gandhi's past warnings about "sleeper cells of other parties within the Congress," underscoring the seriousness of internal threats.
The event itself wasn't without drama. It was briefly disrupted when a section of party workers boycotted the proceedings and raised slogans in support of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Interestingly, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, present at the event, acknowledged the pro-Channi slogans, stating that Channi was "one of the senior and most respected leaders of the party."
Beyond internal issues, Baghel strongly urged the party to focus on defeating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab. He accused the current administration of pushing the state into anarchy, alleging widespread looting and robbery. Baghel painted a grim picture of public safety, claiming that "gangsters were running the roost and people were getting killed in broad daylight," leaving citizens feeling unsafe.
Adding to the party's internal woes, Mr. Channi's conspicuous absence from the event, along with leaders from his 'camp,' has sparked questions about the party's overall cohesion, especially given his reported dissatisfaction with recent party revamps. The road to the 2027 elections appears fraught with both external and internal challenges for the Punjab Congress.
