A Russian drone strike hit a bus carrying mine workers in Ukraine’s central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, killing at least 12 and wounding seven, officials said. The vehicle was traveling about 40 miles (65km) from the frontline. The workers were employed by Ukraine’s largest private energy company, DTEK, and were returning from a shift at a mining facility in the Pavlograd district.
Images published by the state emergency service showed an empty bus with shattered side windows and a windshield hanging from the frame.
Earlier in the day, another drone attack in the region killed a man and a woman in Dnipro, while a separate strike hit a maternity hospital in Zaporizhzhia, wounding seven people.
The assault comes as talks to end the war continue in the background and as a unilateral reduction of Russian strikes announced by the United States was set to expire. A second round of talks among Russian, Ukrainian and U.S. officials on a peace plan is due to begin on Wednesday, with diplomats saying discussions remain underway.
One of Putin’s top envoys, Kirill Dmitriev, held surprise talks with others amid the broader push for a ceasefire, underscoring how fragile the week’s diplomatic momentum remains.
The day’s violence underscores the ongoing danger to civilians and workers near frontline areas, even as political maneuvers unfold.
