Prashant Kishor, founder of Jan Suraaj, spoke in Patna after Bihar's assembly election results, saying the outcome reflected shortcomings in his own approach and that he takes 100% responsibility for the defeat. “If the public did not show faith in us, then the responsibility for that is completely mine. I take that responsibility 100% on myself, that I could not win the faith of the people of Bihar,” he said. He called the campaign an “honest effort” that was “completely unsuccessful,” and admitted they had not managed to win a single seat, while acknowledging there was room for improvement in strategy and messaging that explained the need for a new political alternative. He added that there was “no harm in admitting this,” and that they did not merely lament systemic failings but actively sought to learn from the loss. He stressed that while his team may have erred in approach, they never crossed ethical lines, insisting they had not spread caste-based poison or engaged in Hindu-Muslim politics in Bihar, and had not divided people.
To mark his accountability, Kishor announced a symbolic gesture of atonement: a day-long silent fast at the Gandhi Bhitiharwa Ashram on November 20. He explained that the failure lay in not convincing voters about the need for a new political alternative and that the fast would serve as a form of maun vrat while he reassesses what went wrong. He also noted that while Jan Suraaj played some role in changing Bihar's political landscape, the party’s defeat underscores the need for a new approach and clearer messaging.
The setback was clear: the Jan Suraaj party contested 238 of Bihar’s 243 Assembly seats but failed to win any. Analysts say the bigger question now is how the leadership will regroup, rebuild trust, and offer a credible alternative for future elections. Kishor’s candid acknowledgment of mistakes, paired with his vow to reflect and reform, sets the stage for a potential pivot in Bihar politics.
