A sudden and intense cloudburst unleashed chaos in Pahalgam, South Kashmir, on Saturday, flooding hotels and houses in the Awoora and Dehwathu forest areas. While the visual impact of gushing waters and inundated properties was significant, authorities have confirmed that thankfully, no casualties or injuries were reported in the popular tourist destination. The incident highlights the severe impact of the ongoing monsoon season across vast swathes of India.
The cloudburst in Pahalgam comes as heavy to very heavy rainfall continues to lash numerous Indian states. Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are among the worst-affected regions, grappling with widespread landslides that have severely blocked roads and disrupted daily life. The India Meteorological Department has issued alerts, recording very heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh, and Meghalaya. Additionally, heavy rainfall has been observed in West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
In Uttarakhand, the relentless downpour has led to 120 roads being blocked, including three vital national highways. Rescue operations are underway, with approximately 100 pilgrims safely escorted across a washed-out section of the Yamunotri National Highway. This route had been cut off for two days after a massive landslide at Syanachatti in Uttarkashi district obliterated nearly 100 meters of the road. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel deployed ropes to guide stranded travelers along an alternative, safer path.
The continuous heavy rainfall has also prompted fears in other areas, such as Shimla, where a major landslide scare on July 11 forced residents of Bothwell Estate in Sanjauli to evacuate their homes in the early morning hours, fearing potential collapse. These events underscore the urgent need for caution and preparedness as the monsoon intensifies across the nation.
